Parlour LAB 05 - Designing with Technology

Watch our fifth Parlour LAB here!

In our fifth Parlour Lab, Müge Belek Fialho Teixeira and Nicole Gardner discuss their research into computational design and robotics in conversation with Justine Clarke and myself. They begin with short presentations about their recent research and then discuss a range of topics including whether innovations in computational design and robotics may inadvertently lead to inequalities in architectural and built environment practices; the relationship between making, craft (often thought of as no- or low-tech) and digital (high) technology which is beginning to merge and the resulting blurring of disciplinary boundaries; and some key takeaways for practitioners in the audience. Müge and Nicole’s advice was :

  • for practices to get in touch with university researchers, as they are always working on industry-linked projects that are mutually beneficial;

  • understand that data and automation does not exist to make things faster, even if some tasks get faster we don’t always get more time - we just take on more tasks! So don’t be fooled by thinking that technology will give us more time. Instead, technology can help us to develop design ideas, generate higher quality built environments, create more sustainable practices, test problems before you build them and support post-occupancy evaluations;

  • be open and curious about technology so we can “build the future of architecture together.”
