Parlour LAB 36 - Sound, Space, Action!

You can watch the thirty-sixth Parlour LAB here!

This discussion links sound and space, ethics and action – and the potential for acoustics to impact rehabilitation, climate action and community engagement.

Luke, working in prisons, reminds us that “where people don’t have agency, it really requires extra care.” Micro design decisions can accumulate and compound into a result that mismatches with intention. If we want to focus on rehabilitation and wellbeing, we must think about acoustics.

Leah asks us to pay attention to sound, include it in our site analyses and design responses. Be inspired by the acoustics around you. Listening occurs with our whole body - we feel it when our feet connect with the earth, and in our bones, reverberating throughout our body. We feel it in our gut. Sound evokes memory, distraction, focus, emotion. It can be used as a measure of environmental health, but also as a tool to promote action by engaging our emotions.
