Connecting to Local Community

This Easter was filled with joy seeing our neighbourhood come alive with colourful egg paintings decorating windows around West End, an inner-city suburb of Brisbane. During this time in which COVID-19 is wreaking havoc on our communities, we three neighbours (Kali, Maria and Natalia) were driven by the need for a sense of belonging within our local community; to feel socially connected whilst physically distanced.

Looking for inspiration, we followed the leadership taken by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden’s “The Big New Zealand Easter Egg Hunt” and supplied our neighbours with egg drawings to colour in. In New Zealand, children were invited to colour in or design their own Easter eggs to decorate windows for neighbours to spot during walks in their local area.

Here in West End, everyone got involved!

The response was amazing! In our local area of four streets, we spotted over 30 windows decorated with hand-coloured egg drawings.

So, how are we developing and maintaining this sense of community in our local area?
