Parlour LAB 02 - Architecture on Indigenous Lands

Watch our second Parlour LAB here!

I was thrilled to talk about architecture on Indigenous Lands with our esteemed guests, Carroll Go-Sam and Deidre Brown. The session started with two short presentations, the first from Carroll on Writing, Thinking Indigeneity and the second from Deidre Brown on architecture of the people and their land. We then discussed how Indigeneity shaped their research practice, what unexpected things came up, and why the history of Indigenous environments is relevant for practitioners.

Key takeaways from this conversation for me were for practitioners to:

  • listen, not to talk, when working with Indigenous communities;

  • build trust through ongoing connection; and,

  • create opportunities for Indigenous researchers, architects and community members to lead and shape the process rather than being an ‘add-on’ to the team.
